Aircon gas refill in Johannesburg
A sealed air conditioner does not use its refrigerant up. If the system is low, something is leaking, and filling it without finding the leak just buys you time until it happens again. We connect you with an independent Johannesburg aircon contractor who checks first and quotes you directly.
A sealed system does not run out of gas
Refrigerant circulates in a closed loop and is not consumed by running the unit. A system that has lost pressure has lost it through a joint, a flare, a schrader valve or a hairline crack in a coil.
That is the single most useful thing to know before you book a regas. Filling a system that is still leaking is a repeat visit waiting to happen, and it is worth asking any contractor to test before they fill.
What a proper regas involves
The job starts with the pressures and the temperatures, then a leak test on the joints and the coil. If a leak is found it is repaired and the system is pressure-tested again, and only then is it evacuated and charged to the manufacturer's specification.
Evacuation is the part that is skipped when a job is done cheaply. Pulling a vacuum removes moisture and air from the loop, and leaving them in is how a compressor is quietly damaged over the months that follow.
What refrigerant a system takes
The unit's own data plate names the refrigerant it was built for, and it is not a choice. A system built for one refrigerant is charged with that one, at the mass the manufacturer states.
Refrigerant handling is regulated, and the charged mass matters. Practically, that means you want a contractor who reads the plate, charges by weight, and can tell you which refrigerant your unit takes before they quote.
The sign that it is low, and the signs that it is something else
A slow loss shows up as cooling that gets steadily weaker over months, ice forming on the indoor coil or the pipe, and a unit that runs longer for less result. Those point at refrigerant.
Weak cooling that came on suddenly, with the unit still running normally otherwise, is more often a failed fan, a blocked coil or a control fault. Aircon repair covers those.
Choosing a contractor for this job
This is the job where a cheap quote is most likely to cut a corner, because the shortcuts are invisible: a top-up instead of a leak test, no vacuum, gas charged by guesswork rather than by weight.
Ask what the price includes and whether a leak test is part of it. Published Johannesburg guides describe the regas band and the work behind it (sources: Aircon Installers Johannesburg; The Handyman Johannesburg), and our guide to a unit that is not cooling explains how the symptoms differ.
What moves the quote
We do not publish prices. The contractor quotes you directly once they understand the job. These are the factors that usually make the difference:
- Whether a leak has to be found and repaired before the system is charged.
- Which refrigerant the unit takes, and how much of it the system holds.
- How accessible the indoor and outdoor units and the pipe joints are.
- Whether the system needs evacuation and a full charge or a smaller top-up after a repair.
- Whether the fault turns out to be refrigerant at all.
Our guide to what moves an installation quote in Johannesburg explains how to compare quotes fairly.

Frequently asked questions
How often does an aircon need a gas refill?
A sound, sealed system should not need one. If yours has lost refrigerant, it has a leak, and the leak is the job before the refill is.
Can you just top up the gas?
It can be done, but filling a system that is still leaking is a short-term answer. The contractor should test for a leak first and tell you what they find.
Which gas does my unit take?
The unit's data plate names it, and the system is charged with that refrigerant at the mass the maker states. It is a manufacturer's specification, not a preference.
Is a gas refill something you do yourselves?
No. This website connects you with independent contractors. The contractor tests, repairs and charges the system, and is responsible for that work.
My unit freezes up and stops cooling. Is that gas?
It can be a sign of a slow refrigerant loss, and it can also be a blocked filter or airflow problem. Book it as a repair so the contractor diagnoses it rather than guessing.
