Aircon installation in Johannesburg
Choosing the unit is the smaller half of the job. Getting it sized, placed and piped correctly is the bigger half, and it is the half you live with for years. We connect you with an independent Johannesburg aircon contractor who looks at the rooms first and quotes you directly.
What an aircon installation involves
An installation is a small system, not a box on a wall. It is the indoor head, the outdoor condenser, the insulated pipe between them, the drainage that carries condensate away, the electrical supply and the bracket or stand that carries the condenser. Leave one of those out and you get a unit that drips, rattles or trips a circuit.
The part you see is the indoor head. The part that decides whether you are still happy in three years is the pipework, the fall on the drain and how well the unit was matched to the room it serves.
Sizing comes before buying
A unit that is too small runs flat out and never quite gets the room cool. A unit that is too large cycles on and off, pulls moisture out poorly and wastes power. Sizing uses the floor area, the ceiling height, the window area, which way the room faces and how many people use it.
Published Johannesburg guides describe the same broad capacity bands we do (sources: Aircon Installers Johannesburg; id.org.za). Treat those bands as the start of a conversation with a contractor who measures the actual room, not as the decision itself.
Where the indoor and outdoor units go
The indoor head needs clear space above and around it, out of direct sun on its sensor, and it should not blow straight onto a bed or a desk where someone sits all day. Small choices about position change how the room feels in use.
The condenser needs airflow, some shade and a stand or bracket that will not pass vibration into a wall or a floor. On a flat or a complex the position often needs landlord or body-corporate approval before anything is drilled, so settle that early rather than on the day.
The electrical side
An air conditioner draws a steady load and wants its own circuit with an isolator nearby. In older Johannesburg houses the distribution board may have no spare way for it, or the cable run may be longer than it looks.
Where a new circuit, a new cable run or a board change is needed, ask the contractor who holds the electrical registration for that part of the work and who accepts responsibility for it. This website does not carry out electrical work and claims no registration of its own.
How to compare installation quotes
Ask what is included: the unit and its capacity, the length of the pipe run and its insulation, the drainage, the bracket or stand, the electrical connection and the making good after the holes are cut. A low headline often hides a short pipe run or electrical work priced separately.
Ask how the unit was sized, what happens to the old unit if you have one, and what warranty the contractor gives on the unit and on their own work. Our guide to what moves an installation quote sets out the questions in order.
What moves the quote
We do not publish prices. The contractor quotes you directly once they understand the job. These are the factors that usually make the difference:
- The number of rooms and the capacity each one needs.
- Floor area, ceiling height, window area and which way the rooms face.
- The length and route of the pipe run, and how hard the wall is to work through.
- Where the condenser can go, and whether approval is needed for it.
- The electrical circuit, the isolator and any board work.
- Making good the wall after the pipe run and the drain are installed.
- The season, and how far ahead the good contractors are booked.
Our guide to what moves an installation quote in Johannesburg explains how to compare quotes fairly.

Frequently asked questions
Do you install air conditioners yourselves?
No. This website connects you with independent contractors who cover your area. The contractor advises on the system, quotes you and does the work, and is responsible for it.
What size unit do I need?
That depends on the room: its area, its ceiling height, its windows and which way they face. A contractor should measure before advising. Our sizing guide explains what goes into the answer.
Can a unit be installed on any wall?
Mostly, but the pipe run, the drainage fall and the position of the condenser all set limits. In a flat or a complex, the landlord or body corporate may also have to approve the condenser position.
Is the electrical work part of the installation?
It has to be done, and it has to be done by someone who holds the electrical registration for it. Ask the contractor who carries out that part of the job and who is responsible for it.
How long does an installation take?
A straightforward single split is usually a day's work, but access, wall construction and electrical work can stretch it. Ask the contractor for their own estimate for your property.
