What a service actually covers

A service is a clean and a check, not a repair. It usually covers the filters, the indoor coil and blower, the condensate drain and tray, the outdoor coil and fan, and a look at the electrical connections, the gas pressures and the controls while the unit is open.

Done properly it takes the unit back to how it ran when it was new, and it is the moment where a small fault is found before it becomes a call-out in the middle of a heatwave.

Why it matters more here than in a mild climate

The Highveld throws dust and pollen at everything, and a home near a busy road or an open field takes more of it. A filter that is half blocked makes the unit work harder, run hotter and use more power to do the same job.

That is not a small effect. It shortens the life of the parts that are expensive to replace, and it is the reason a unit that was fine last summer feels weak by the next one.

How often to service

For a home unit that runs through the summer, an annual service before the season is the sensible floor. A unit that runs all year, or a home on a dusty road, or a unit in an office or a shop where people are in it daily, wants more than that.

The practical pattern is a clean at the start of summer and a second clean through the middle of the season on a hard-used unit. Our guide to how often to service an aircon explains how to read your own unit.

A deep clean is not the same as a service

Where a unit has years of build-up, or has been used in a kitchen or a workshop, a standard clean is not enough. A deeper clean strips the indoor coil and blower and flushes the drain properly, and it takes longer and costs more than a routine visit.

Ask which one your unit needs. A contractor who offers the deeper clean only where it is actually needed is worth keeping.

What a service does not fix

A clean will not repair a failed fan, a dead control board or a leak that has emptied the system. If the unit is not cooling because a part has failed, that is a repair, and pretending otherwise just delays it.

If you are not sure which you need, describe what the unit does in the enquiry and let the contractor say. Aircon repair covers the fault side of things.

What moves the quote

We do not publish prices. The contractor quotes you directly once they understand the job. These are the factors that usually make the difference:

  • How many indoor units are being serviced.
  • Whether the unit needs a routine clean or a deeper strip and flush.
  • How accessible the indoor head and the outdoor condenser are.
  • How much build-up there is, and how long since the last clean.
  • Whether the drain needs clearing as part of the visit.
  • How many units the contractor can do in one trip.

Frequently asked questions

How often should I service my aircon in Johannesburg?

Once a year before summer is the sensible floor for a home unit. A hard-used unit, or one in a dusty spot, wants a clean at the start of the season and a second one through it.

What does a service include?

Filters, coils, blower, drain and tray, the outdoor unit, and a check of the electrical connections, gas pressures and controls. Ask the contractor to confirm exactly what they cover.

Can a service fix a unit that is not cooling?

Sometimes a blocked filter or coil is the whole problem, and cleaning it restores the cooling. If a part has failed, the unit needs a repair instead, and the contractor should tell you which it is.

Do you service air conditioners yourselves?

No. This website connects you with independent contractors who do the work. The contractor quotes you directly and is responsible for the service.

Is a chemical clean worth it?

Where there is real build-up, yes, because a routine wipe will not reach it. Where there is not, no. Ask the contractor which one your unit actually needs.
