What usually goes wrong

Most repair calls in Johannesburg come down to a handful of things: a filter and coil packed with dust, a drain line that has blocked and is dripping indoors, a fan or compressor that has failed, a sensor or control board that has given up, or a refrigerant leak that has slowly emptied the system.

Which one it is matters, because the fixes are not interchangeable. A unit that is not cooling is not automatically short of refrigerant, and adding gas to a system that is not leaking wastes money and hides the real problem.

Finding the fault before quoting for parts

A proper repair starts with the symptoms and works back: when it stopped, what it does when it is switched on, what the indoor and outdoor units sound and look like, and whether the drain is running. That is why a call-out begins with questions and a look at the unit.

Only then does a replaced part make sense. Ask the contractor to tell you what the fault is and why the part they propose fixes it, in plain language, before you agree to the work.

Repair or replace

The honest answer depends on the age of the unit, the cost of the part against the cost of a new unit, and whether the fault is a one-off or the start of a run of them. A single failed fan motor on a sound unit is usually worth fixing; a compressor failure on a very old unit often is not.

Ask the contractor to give you both numbers before you decide, and to say which way they would go if it were their own unit. If a replacement is the better answer, aircon installation covers what that involves.

Why faults cluster in a Highveld summer

Highveld dust and pollen load filters and coils fast, and a blocked filter makes a unit work harder and run hotter. Through the peak the unit runs longer each day, which is when a worn fan, a tired capacitor or a slow leak finally shows itself.

That is the case for servicing a unit before the season rather than waiting for it to fail in the middle of it. Our service-frequency guide explains what a service catches early.

What to have ready when you book

Have the make and model of the unit, roughly how old it is, and a short description of what it does now. Note whether the indoor unit runs at all, whether the outdoor unit starts, and whether anything leaks or trips.

If the unit shows an error code on the remote or the indoor display, send it in the enquiry. It saves the contractor a trip and can point straight at the fault.

What moves the quote

We do not publish prices. The contractor quotes you directly once they understand the job. These are the factors that usually make the difference:

  • What the fault turns out to be, and which part it needs.
  • The make and model of the unit, and whether spares are still available for it.
  • The height and access to the indoor head and the outdoor condenser.
  • Whether the fault is electrical, mechanical or a refrigerant leak.
  • Whether one visit is enough or the job needs a return with a part.
  • Whether a repair is still worth it against replacing the unit.

Our guide to what moves an installation quote in Johannesburg explains how to compare quotes fairly.

Frequently asked questions

My aircon is running but not cooling. Is it out of gas?

Not necessarily, and no one can tell from the sound of it. A dirty coil, a failed fan, a blocked drain or a control fault all cool poorly too. The contractor tests the unit rather than assuming a leak.

Can you repair the unit in one visit?

Sometimes, if the fault is simple and the part is on hand. Often the contractor diagnoses first and returns with what is needed. Ask what to expect for your unit when you book.

Do you repair the units yourselves?

No. This website connects you with independent contractors. The contractor diagnoses the fault, quotes you and carries out the repair, and is responsible for it.

The indoor unit is dripping water. Is that a repair?

Usually it is a blocked or badly angled condensate drain, which is a straightforward fix once it is cleared. It still needs someone on site, so book it as a repair and describe the drip.

Is it worth repairing an old aircon?

That depends on the fault and the cost of the part against a replacement. Ask for both options in writing and decide from there.
